Whittaker and Chibnall on the big stunt

Spoiler alert! The following contains spoilers for the Season 11 premiere of “Doctor Who,” “The Woman Who Fell to Earth.”

Fans of “Doctor Who” may never look at construction cranes the same way again.

In the Season 11 premiere of BBC America’s sci-fi drama, fans got their first real look at new Doctor Jodie Whittaker’s version of the show, as she gathered her new companions, built a sonic screwdriver and defeated her first villain.

She also happened to take a massive mid-air jump between two construction cranes.

It was a triumphant moment, unlike any stunt performed on the show before. Series producer and writer Chris Chibnall and Whittaker explain how, exactly, it came about.

“I think it was really important for me, in terms of the new Doctor, that she had something that was heroic, physical, a proper kind of Indiana Jones moment,” Chibnall says. “We can try something new, we can up the ante, and hopefully, you’re watching that sequence going, ‘They’re not going to go there, she’s not going to go there, it’s not going to do that.’ It’s that joy of a really great, funny, physical, action adventure stunt that has real scale.”

Chibnall says Whittaker performed the jump herself, with no stunt double.

“In week one!” Whittaker adds. “That was the second day of my time on the show. It was certainly (an introduction) into this world.”
